Biostatistics - 5 Credits

where, when, what
First of all, welcome! My lessons will be held at the "polo didattico di via Valmaura" (do you know where is it?), starting from early October until late December, according to the following timetable and with this official program. Roughly speaking, during the course we will touch four great subject
:
  • a refresh of basic math tools, as exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions
  • the so-called descriptive statistics (which deals with stuff like average, mean, median, standard deviations, correlation ...)
  • the elementary probability theory (i.e. what is probability, conditional probability, Bayes formula, and how can we use it in medical diagnostic tests)
  • the inferential statistics (more or less, how can we estimate some unknown health-parameters of a certain population simply studying a little sample of it, or how can we decide if a drug is a good or an unuseful one)

how can we meet
This is not a problem, write me an e-mail and we'll organize something.

the exam
Well, don't worry. You will see that the questions are rather understandable, in the sense they are "mathematically written", and so although your italian knowledge is poor, this will not be a concrete limit.

You can choose the possibility to make:
a written test, with some exercise to do in 90 minutes (70% of the final mark)
an oral test (30% of the final mark)

In general, students do not follow this way, but prefer to make some written test during the course, in order to skip the classical written + oral examination. I will explain it better to you when we meet.

date of exams

Have a look to the italian page.

books and other didactical stuff

Here we are! You'll need a pocket calculator to make some job, and in Valmaura you will find some computers. Books? Well, the easiest thing to do is to use my grey papers.
